The story of Studio ROOF
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, we were invited to design Studio Roof’s first book. In this publication, founders Romy and Ilya open the doors to their creative universe and share the story of Studio Roof’s origins, its evolving design process, the strong focus on family, inspiring collaborations, and the many voices that have contributed to this world over the past two decades. For the typography, we selected a typeface with subtle shifts and imperfections, giving the book a distinct character. The typeface allowed for playful typography: titles set along curved lines or at angled positions, and captions that wrap around images. In this way, the vibrant and imaginative world of Studio Roof is reflected even more strongly. As with Studio Roof’s products, color plays a central role in the book. To emphasize this, we completely avoided black and worked instead with colored typography, backgrounds, and text accents. For the cover, we chose bright Pantone colors, making the book a bold and engaging object that naturally aligns with the colorful universe of the products.

Studio Roof’s products are characterized by shapes pressed from cardboard and then assembled into 3D objects, such as insects and flowers. This distinctive product concept became the inspiration for the front and back covers of the book. The die-cut cardboard shapes create a layered, tactile cover, with the anniversary number 20 subtly revealed beneath the cut-outs.

‘We look back on our collaboration with Studio& with great joy. From the very first moment, they intuitively understood our visual language and translated it into a book design that truly does justice to our twentieth anniversary.
After all, creating a book is so much more than simply placing beautiful images one after another. We know how to create images and tell stories, but shaping a narrative in book form is a craft of its own.
Cathelijn and Mariëlle gave each chapter a surprising treatment, making every page a new discovery. The process required a lot of work on both sides, but above all, it felt like a celebration. The result is a publication we are incredibly proud of. Without their creative strength and dedication, this book would never have been the same.’
